Social Action Commission

The Social Action Commission applies itself to many areas of social service. Here are just a few of the many events they sponsor:

Baby Dresser Project
A chest of drawers is placed in the foyer three times a year. It is used as a receptacle for new infant care items. Donations are pledged from a suggestion sheet, then placed in the dresser as they are purchased. After the dresser is filled, it is given to “Johnson County Advise and Aid”, who in turn gives it to a new mother and baby.

Back to School Supply Drive
In late July and early August, school supplies are collected and donated to Catholic Charities and/or MLM for needy school children throughout the area.

Christmas Store
Before Thanksgiving, an appeal for gifts for the MLM (Metropolitan Lutheran Ministries) Christmas Store is made. Gift suggestions are then purchased by Trinity members, who bring the new gifts to church. These are collected over several weeks and then taken to the Christmas Store, where they are distributed to needy families. Many Trinity volunteers also help man the Christmas Store during distribution.

Crop Walk
Organized with Heart of America Church World Services, participants solicit donors on a per-mile basis to raise funds to relieve hunger and suffering in the Kansas City metro area.

Food of the Month
Each month of the year, a different food category is collected in the foyer and taken to the MLM Food Pantry. Each January, Trinity participates in “Souper Bowl Sunday”, which is used to collect large numbers of canned goods.

Heart-to-Heart Pancake Breakfast
This popular breakfast raises funds for Trinity's own members who may be faced with disasters which require financial assistance. The fund is a ready resource to give financial aid in dire circumstances.

Life Chain
This national event occurs during the second week of October in over 900 cities in the U.S. and Canada. It is a one hour, peaceful pro-life witness where participants hold official signs along well-traveled thoroughfares. The Kansas portion of the chain is along 95th Street.

Respect Life Sunday School
January is Respect Life Month and each Sunday of the month a “Life Issues Class” is offered during the 9:30 Sunday School hour. Guest speakers present topics related to life issues.

Spring Fling Drive
This is MLM's main fund drive for their Christmas Stores. Trinity members take garage sale, craft and baked goods to Bethany Lutheran Church at 91st and Lamar where they are sold. The atmosphere is fair-like and is a great time for all ages!

Voter Registration
A table in Trinity's foyer provides voter registration forms, information and advance mail ballots around primary and general election times. Trinity also serves as the local polling place on election day.

Worship Center Christmas Decoration/Fellowship Event
Immediately after Thanksgiving, the Social Action Commission, together with LWML members, the Fellowship Commission and others, sets up decorations in the Worship Center, including the three Christmas trees.
